Over the past couple weeks I have landed myself hospital a couple times with anaphylactic shock, seems my body decided the humble age of 26 was a good enough time as any to develop new shellfish allergies. Had a really scary couple weeks not knowing exactly what I was allergic to whilst waiting for the test results.
When I eventually returned to school after a couple days off in the hospital my favorite third year class decorated the black board with messages for Athough half the boys are terrors to teach they cute lil things at times, needless to say I was quite touched by the gesture.

Kobe JET Scavenger Hunt 2014 (SCUNT)
So once again its that magical time of year, in which us crazy Kobe kids decent upon the streets of Sannomiya for one epic night of chaos and enjoy. Saturday June 7th 2014 was the eveningof annual Kobe JET Scavenger hunt (abbreviated to SCUNT).
The basics of the the game are as follows:
Prior to the event ALT’s are asked to assemble teams of up to 8 with a theme of some description, as points are typically awarded for ‘best’ dressed’ crazy costumes are a must!
Teams assemble at ‘paiyama’ (the central meeting spot of Sannomiya) at 7PM, the night of the event and are given a list of clues to solve ‘the mystery’ which varies year by year depending upon the theme.
There are various other ALTs playing on the organizers team spread across the city who must be tracked down and interrogated. As one successfully interviews ‘suspects’ they receive more and more clues, meanwhile additional points can be scored for taking specific ‘crazy photos’ along the way.
This is my third year participating in the event and I decided my team was to go all out with costumes this time. Being quite fond of the anime Shingeki no Kyojin 進撃の巨人 (literally ‘The Advancing Giants’ but the English title being Attack on Titan), I decided to form a group to cosplay as the Survey Corps from the show. As a little play on words I named our team Shingeki no Kobe 進撃の神戸 (Advance on Kobe) however a friend later told me a much more fitting title I should have named it Shingeki no Gaijin 進撃の外人 (The Advancing Foreigners), but shouganai!
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the series, it is immensely popular in Japan and now around the world. The anime takes place in a world where humanity was nearly wiped out by a race of mindless humanoid giants who eat people. These giants are the Titans. Approximately one hundred years after the sudden appearance of the Titans humanity has retreated behind a series of three concentric circular walls. One day tragedy strikes when an especially large and intelligent Titan appears and destroys the outermost gate. After losing everything the protagonist Eren and his friends join the army, planning to seek revenge through the Scout Regiment. In a nutshell……
This year the organizing of the event was handed over to two of my most amazing friends Andrew and Elizabeth who inherited it the lovely Jojo, a JET who left us last year. Under the pseudonyms of Agent Tek and Agent Cougarwho delivered to us a James Bond themed SCUNT for 2014.
This years teams:
My very own, Shingeki no Kobe
And yes believe it or not that is I as the Titan, our Survey Corps comprised of Paul, Peter, Ryan, Sandy, Matt and Octavio.
Shambolic Sextet
JETolution
S and M
Sandys Betrayal
Guild of Tea & Cookies
Skittles
Kobe Banditos – formerly known as the Cumslingers (silent r)
Captal Vice
District Yarimashou
Cartoon JETwork
Please enjoy some of our stupid photos from the evening.

Umeshu 梅酒 Workshop 2014
Last weekend’s I ran my annual umeshu 梅酒 workshop and decided to spice things up this year (literally).
Of my 3 batches only the center one is umeshu, this year I added 700ml of spiced rum, vanilla beans, cinnamon, cloves, peppercorn and all spice.
The other 2 flanking are vanilla mango/blueberryshu and ninnikushu にんにく酒 (garlic liquor).
I’m coming home!
Jinjiidou 人事異動: The Great Teacher Shuffle
Every 12 months in all public organizations in Japan a grand mass personnel swap occurs which called Jinjiidou 人事異動 (annual staff reassignment).
As most JET participants will find themselves working at a public school of some description this change tends to affect us quite considerably.
For me personally this change has completely flipped my day to day life on its head, all 3 of my 校長先生 (principals) at my schools have been switched in the coming year. Most teachers are switching the year level they teach and most importantly, my l inexperienced and largely incompetent chief OTE has been replaced with a woman who is her polar opposite!
Regardless I have high hopes for the future.
JET Program 2013-2014 Recontracting!
As of today it’s all official, I have past the recontracting interview, received all the paperwork and I will be here in Kobe for at least another 16 month (though to be honest probably a lot longer)!!! Here in Kobe it’s not such a big deal to stay here a long time, all you gotta pretty much do is be good at your job and an integral part of the JET community.
It seems insane that almost a year has passed since I arrived here in Japan and I have come a long long way!
Also I’ma take this opportunity to apologize for the reduced postings this year, I have recently begun taking my 日本語 study a lot more seriously which has been chewing up a lot of the free time I was previously putting towards this blog, alongside that its winter, unless you guys are interested in my tales of playing ps3 n eating nabe not that much has been going on. That said hang tight, nihonomnom is in no way dead! A dream of spring is coming!
I leave you with a picture I drew whilst bored at my desk, takoichigodaifuku たこ苺大福 the smallfolk of the imaginary kingdom of Takotopia. A grand realm which exists only in the confines of my head XD
Taiikusai 体育祭 (Sports Festival) 2012
A couple weeks ago my base Junior high school and 2 Elementary schools had their annual sports festivals. At shougakko 小学校 (elementary school) it is referred to as an Undoukai 運動会 and at chuugakko 中学校 (Junior high school) it’s a Taiikusai 体育祭.
I was lucky enough to attend both….. well in truth at least at the JHS level I had no say in the matter as it is part of my job.
Unlike their western equivalents the sports festivals in Japan are taken nothing short of absolutely seriously.
The event is typically run on a Saturday, with the day off being passed over to the following Monday.
Leading up to the even students have many classes dedicated to training, creating banners and rehearsing intricate marches for the day.
In fact classes are typically set aside the day before the Taiikusai to run a full rehearsal of the schedule.
Like most things in Japan, everyone is equal and participation is mandatory.
Lets just say they really drive home the team spirit at these things.
In JHS students are divided up into teams based upon their grade level and class, each set upon their most artistic classmates the task of creating an elaborate banner.
The following are a couple of my favourites (^∇^)
In ES the entire student body is broken into 2 large teams each student either being assigned Shirogumi 白組 (White Team) or Akagumi 紅組 (Red Team) accordingly who will face off against each other in comedic sports battles throughout the day.
Being the avid amateur photographer that I am an awful lot I photos were taken throughout the day, unfortunately I can’t freely post students faces to the interwebs without permissions so forgive my crude ‘editing’ to keep them anonymous.
A couple photos from the opening ceremony
Me running in the relay race against my students!
Half time Ouendan 応援団 (Japanese Cheer Squad)
Half time suisougakudan 吹奏楽団 (Brass Band)
In the afternoon the students paraded around the oval donned in their respective clubs uniforms.
Table Tennis Club 卓球部 (poor kids the only member)
Club Uniform Baton Race (kendo club has a 100m head start to compensate the weight of running in full bogu, track and field starts 100m behind as they their club specializes in sprinting.)
Students vs PTA (Parent Teachers Association) Tug-of-war
Kumitaiso 組体操
Here are a couple photos from one of my shougakko’s 小学校 (elementary school) Undoukai 運動会, rather than being centered around individual competition, the focus is more on teamwork with the kids playing dozens of crazy games. Also instead of being segregated by year level and class the entire team is split into 2 huge teams Akagumi 紅組 (Red Team) and Shirogumi 白組 (White Team).
In addition to the events the students also put on acrobatic type shows for the spectators that they practice for many weeks preceding the event.
The 5-6grade students annually do a kumitaiso 組体操 (coordinated group gymnastics) performance in which teams form pyramids or other shapes.
For the finale the kids form a 4 story pyramid, was freakin crazy and chotto dangerous…..
WINNING!!
