Every summer Pepsi releases a crazy new variant of its trademark cola, this year on July 24th Salty Watermelon Pepsi hit the shelves.
I had read about this a couple weeks prior so was eager to give it a try.
Now the salt part isn’t as crazy as it sounds, in fact many Japanese people often eat their watermelon with salt. By opening up taste buds, the saltiness apparently enhances the flavor making the watermelon sweeter and even more delicious!
Now this isn’t the first product of such a flavor to hit the markets, a couple years ago Nestlé released a ‘Watermelon and Salt’ flavored Kit Kat. However Pepsi has started a trend releasing annual crazy flavors, last winter the strawberry milk flavored ‘Pink Pepsi’ hit the shelves, following the releases of ‘Pepsi Azuki’, ‘Pepsi Ice Cucumber’ and ‘Pepsi Shiso’ in years past.
In terms of colour, the beverage is a less than watermelony shade of neon pink. Thankfully the taste however was slightly reminiscent of real watermelon and not it’s artificial candy counterpart.
I’m not really a fan of sugary beverages so I won’t be drinking it again by choice but it certainly wasn’t unpleasant.
